What are EMDR intensives?
An EMDR intensive therapy experience is very similar to a traditional one-hour therapy session — with the benefit of additional time. The extended time allows for resourcing and grounding, finding our way to the key experiences that shaped you, processing those memories and experiences, and reinforcing a new felt sense of safety and connection. While all of this can be achieved in weekly one-hour sessions, the intensive offers an accelerated process in a single block of time rather than multiple weekly sessions.
Intensives therapy sessions last for 4-8 hours depending on your time, therapy goals, and other factors. Specific therapies I incorporate in intensives include mindfulness, attachment resourcing, ego-state interventions, and EMDR therapy.
The first step is an initial one-hour information and assessment session. This initial session is designed to answer your questions about intensives, to discuss your expectations, and to determine your readiness for participating in an accelerated, longer therapy session. The initial assessment also is the time to begin identifying your goals for therapy and the specific issues you want to address—what you want to see more or less of in your life.
Why an intensive?
Intensive therapy sessions increase the amount of time spent working on therapeutic goals in a single session. In weekly sessions, a good portion of every session is devoted to the important steps of getting settled into the room, sharing the highs and/or lows of your week, and preparing to return to your day. In an intensive, you experience more total time in processing and healing.
A four-hour intensive is roughly equivalent to 6-8 weekly, one-hour therapy sessions.
Intensive therapy is designed for those whose schedules won’t permit them an hour every week to devote to therapy. Intensives also are an excellent option for those who are frustrated by the pace of progress in weekly, one-hour session. Some may have a specific event or experience that they want to work through in a shorter amount of time. Others may prefer to spend several concentrated hours in therapy once a month rather than in weekly sessions.
What does it cost?
I offer half-day EMDR Intensives at $700 for 4 hours, half due upon scheduling. Full-day EMDR Intensives are $1200 for 7 hours, half due upon scheduling.
